Mississippi agricultural commissioner, Cindy Hyde-Smith, was chosen by governor Phil Bryant to become a U.S. senate. She will remain there until the three way contest in November.
This is similar to Francis Perkins being the first woman to serve in the cabinet in 1933.
I can’t believe this is Mississippi’s first woman to participate in Congress. I’m confused as to why it took so long but I’m glad there is progress being made.

I am proud to say that women have broken another barrier within our legislature and our government. The more educated and established we are the more able we are to represent ourselves. Time's up for people who speak on behalf of all citizens including the issues minorities and women face when they are neither, we are able to represent ourselves.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe Mississippi hasn't had a female representitave before. I do think that it's important that a woman is a part of the legislature though.
