Black cats are 2/3 less likely to be adopted than other cats, because of the negative stigma and superstitions attached to them through a long history of myths and legends. Even in cultures where black cats are not seen as negative omens, black cats have a significantly lower adoption rate. A shelter in Colorado had 50 unadopted black cats before the release on Black Panther, after the release every single cat was adopted, many of them getting names like T'challa and Okoye. The writer states that wether or not this trend spreads, it is a step in the right direction.
History repeats its self in that the trends in the adoption of children reflect the current trends in favor of certain demographics.
