Zoe Norton-Rodriguez--Flex--For first time, company owner faces life sentence for food poisoning outbreak

Stewart Parnell has been accused of knowingly allowing a salmonella outbreak to happen. He runs a peanut butter business and one of the deadliest outbreaks in recent history, 9 people died and at least 714 people were sickened by the peanut butter. Allegedly, Parnell was told about the potential poisoning and replied with “just ship it”. He faces life in prison, and if he gets it, it would be the harshest punishment ever given for this type of crime.

This is pretty terrible, It doesn’t make sense for him to have willfully ignored it so there must be something he gained from doing this. The article starts off with the personal pain this outbreak has caused. It tells the story of how his mother died from salmonella and how he went on to become a food safety activist and has been doing everything in his power to get Stewart Parnell a life sentence.

  1. I understand how extreme this punishment it, in a way I do support it because he did willingly and knowingly hurt people. And in a way he did kill those who died from eating the food product he declared fine to consume and sell (Zoe Roberts 3rd Period)
