Predict when you die? -Julianne Swaykus period 6

Simon Cowell, a famous tv star, got a high tech DNA test done from X factor's chief that predicts  your year of death. He said: “I had the DNA test done in LA which predicts when you’re going to die. They take your blood and DNA, then give you back a sheet of paper which says ‘We think you’re going to be alive until xxxx’." Despite his smoking habit, he is predicted to live until 2055. In the DNA tests, scientists look at telomeres – protective caps of DNA at the ends of chromosomes that shorten over time.
This article caught my attention, because it surprises me everyday how advanced our technology is getting/how fast it is happening. We have already created machines that predict your death year, 3D printers, iPhone 6's, and in 1973 was the first time we made the basic model of a cell phone. Our society is constantly inventing new things and experimenting, but the question is, is this really a good thing?

  1. This seems really cool, but I wonder if it actually works? How much it costs? and is anyone else afraid to do it because they would rather not know just in case your results aren't the best?

  2. I think it is very possible to predict your death. Our generation is getting more creative and unique. Let's see what it has for us in the future.

  3. I just read a similar article to this today. Google was working on a project a while back called Calico where they studied the genes of people over 100 years. They think they can manipulate telomeres to increase life expectancy. The idea of evaluating your personal health and genetic history to determine your life expectancy is practical already, but to be able to change that would be amazing.

  5. I think it's possible to predict your death, but who would want to know. You're supposed to live your life like its your last day. There are so many new technology things coming out everyday. I can see this coming soon in the future. -Kayleigh Smerud

  6. This is very interesting because it is showing how much our world is getting to the point where man controls everything, when you die, when you live, what you eat, how you breathe. These days technology has such a large impact on our world and how we live in it.

  7. This is quite scary: how rapidly technology is advancing and how intelligent our race is becoming. I honestly wouldn't want to know when I die! But, I am curious to know if it really works. Guess I'll see in 2055!

  8. This is kinda frightful. But do we know this test actually is accurate? And I bet this cost a fortune to take, so who would spend that much money to know when they are going to die? I think that if you had to the choice that most people would choose to not know.

  9. I think that it is cool that they can do such tests but I think it is slightly inaccurate. Health is a huge part of living but there are a ton of other causes of death.
