Victoria Garza "How Many Deaths Did Volkswagen’s Deception Cause in U.S.?"

Volkswagen recently installed a software that deceived emission tests and emitted pollutants way above the legal level. The chemical released, nitrogen oxide or NOx, is extremely harmful to the respiratory system of humans. It can cause premature deaths, airway inflammation, coughing and wheezing, and can lower our resistance to respiratory illnesses. Since 2009, about 46,000 tons of pollutants have been released into the atmosphere.

I was really disappointed when I read this article. It's frustrating that a company or any person for that matter would knowingly do something that could harm the environment. It is also proven that this pollution can be really harmful to humans and our respiratory systems. There have been a lot of initiatives recently which have promoted the conservation of our environment, and this unfortunate occurrence has added more pollution to our already polluted atmosphere. This relates to U.S. history because it is a direct example of how our inventions and developments throughout U.S. history can negatively effected our environment.

  1. I agree Victoria! The fact that Volkswagon thought it would be better to cheat the system and hurt the environment, rather than spend some more money to actually come through with their fuel efficient promise is highly disappointing.

  2. The fact that some companies are okay with harming the environment just so they can get more money is upsetting to me. What is the point of having all that money, if they are destroying the planet in order to make it? --Claudia Anthony

Wow this is very alarming. I had no idea that this was happening. I can't believe that somebody would do this on purpose. They know that what they are doing is wrong and can end up drastically hurting people and the environment.

  4. I agree that is disappointing. It is also infuriating when the same people who breathe this air are polluting it to make more money. However, it's over now, and whatever loyal customers Volkswagen had are most likely gone. The general public as well as major agencies are filing lawsuits Volkswagen won't win. This company is rolling downhill quick.

  5. Glad this came out now, so it wouldn't be hidden behind a curtain any longer! This matter it quite alarming. It makes me think what other things could be happening that we are so blind to, simply because we didn't know and because we were lied to.

  6. this also questions other companies that might say their 'environmentally safe' when in reality they're not
