NJHS Star Quarterback Dies After Injury From Game// Arianna Sotero 1st Period
Evan Murray, senior and star athlete, played for Warren Hills Regional High School. On Friday night, Murray took a hit from a player on the opposing team, Summit. Murray stated that he felt "woozy", but he assured his teammates that he'd be fine. He began walking off the field and when he reached the sidelines, Murray suddenly fell and couldn't stand up. With assistance, he stood up, was put on a gurney, and was rushed to the hospital. "He tried giving a thumbs up to the rest of the team, and all of us cheered," said Kaitlin Bell, a varsity cheerleader from WHRHS, through tears. "Our coach was telling us that he was going to be all right. "We didn't expect anything would happen."
A few hours later at a local hospital, Murray was pronounced dead. Today, family, friends, teammates, and neighbors gathered for a memorial on the football field where he played his last game. A good friend of Murray wrote on twitter,"Man. Myth. Legend. I hope one day I can be half of the man Evan Murray was and forever will be."
This is a truly tragic story. I can't imagine what Murray's family must be going through. Their kid was injured and killed by doing something he loved. But sadly, this isn't a first of stories like Murray's. According to NYDailyNews, an average of 12 players die every year from an injury on the football field. Football is a dangerous and demanding sport, but the amount of deaths that result is nonsensical. These stats should be alarming enough for more precautions to be taken. I hope that Murray won't disappear under the long list of football deaths, but he will be a start to a change that prevents tragedies like this from happening again.

Doing something you love should not result in your death. Hopefully someone will begin to put rules in place to protect athletes.
ReplyDeleteIt is crazy how many deaths occur while playing high school football. You wouldn't think anything would happen, especially on a high school level, but this just shows that you have to be prepared for anything.

It amazes me how many deaths occur in such a common sport like football. Hopefully this case will be a turning point for people to take football safety more serious.
ReplyDeleteSports in general can be dangerous if you are not careful. It is very sad how this guy died. He died by doing something he loved. His family and friends thought he was gonna be fine.
