Iraq’s announcement worries the U.S; Lauren Bush; 9th Period

On Saturday, September 26, 2015, Iraq announced that it will be sharing intelligence with Russia, Iran, and Syria in an attempt to win the fight against ISIS. Since last year, the U.S. has been bombing ISIS bases located in Syria and Iraq. But Russia’s increased presence in the region has concerned the U.S. Russia’s military buildup of aircrafts, tanks, and missiles in Syria has led to suspicions of an alliance between Moscow and Baghdad. President Barak Obama is scheduled to meet with Vladimir Putin, President of Russia, in order to discuss their purpose in Syria.

The concept of uniting against the lesser of two evils has caused cooperation between countries with typically uneasy relationships. Using a scapegoat to bring together unlikely allies has appeared many times in history. In the colonies for example, the colonists were united by their (generally) shared hatred of the Catholic Church and Britain’s restrictive policies. But I too am suspicious of Russia’s true intentions in Syria. We cannot overlook the fact that ISIS recruits in Russia have increased quite a bit recently. What if this is just their way of saying, keep your friends close and your enemies closer? I’m curious to see how this agreement plays out, and to see how Russia takes action against ISIS.

  1. I agree this idea has potential finally bringing these countries together but it also could potentially disastrous (Bella Di Fazio pd:8)

  2. I can't wait for more of this story to present itself. This coming together could either be catastrophic or the step in the direction of peace in the east.
