Summary
Many people sometimes find themselves wondering, "How many active serial killer are operating in the United States right now?,""Are they just a relic of the past?" America's most infamous serial killers, Ted Bundy, John Wayne Gacy, and Richard Ramirez, were all active 30+ years ago, giving people a sense that this type of crime has tapered off. But in reality, there are 25 to 50 active serial killers in the U.S. at any given moment, according to John Douglas (baebaebaebaebae), former chief of the FBI's Serial Crime Unit. A serial killer is someone who has killed three or more people at separate places and times, with a cooling off period between murders; this cooling off period is what separates serial killers from mass murders. Another question people find themselves asking is "how many people do serial killers kill each year?" Serial murder makes up 1% of the 15,00 murders committed in the United States each year, which is 150 people killed each year by serial killers, the same as the number of people killed by falling coconuts. Also there are a lot of unsolved serial murder cases in the United states, like the recent deaths of 6 women in Chillicothe, Ohio. Another common question people are asking is, "Who are these serial killers?"Unlike the stereotypes portrayed on t.v., 20% of serial killers are African-American, 17% of serial killers are females, many of them are married and active in their communities, and the majority suffer from personality disorders. But despite our culture fascination with serial killers, most of us will never encounter a serial killer.

BErnadette NEgrete: i watch a lot of criminal minds and i have found out that there are about 35 active serial killers in the US alone. I have also read online that on average 1 out of 8 people you walk by are psychopaths. With this statistic, you are more likely to encounter a psychopath rather than a seriel killer.
ReplyDeleteI believe the correct statistic is 1 out of every 25 people is a psychopath or sociopath. Also a lot of the most successful businessman, lawyers, ect. are sociopaths or show sociopathic traits.

DeleteEven though these statistics aren't that high, it's still very shocking that there is that many people still considered to be a serial killer. I believe a lot of times there urge for them to kill is from a child hood memory they need to fulfill. If our school systems could catch on earlier to these uprisings of odd behavior, we might be able to lower these statistics even more.
ReplyDeleteYes there is a lot of debate with in the field as to whether or not serial killers are born or made.

DeleteOkay, I'm not going to lie, I have never really found myself wondering, "How many active serial killers are in the U.S. right now" but that is not to say that I won't now...thank you very much. I think the most unnerving fact in here-- the one that really made me look over my shoulder-- was that many of these killers are active people in our community. Megga creepy. Also the fact about the coconuts. That made me laugh.
ReplyDeleteThe actual number of active serial killers it terrifying! I think it seems shocking because the romantic nature an faciatipn with killers although the still prominent, seems to be more frowned upon in our modern age. -Emily Eppig 8th
ReplyDeleteI wonder why there are no famous current ones? Are they getting harder to catch or are we just not publicizing it?
ReplyDeleteHonestly the most "successful" serial killers are the ones that don't get caught. But the reason why I think they are so hard to catch is because if they cross into different police jurisdiction their crimes will most likely not be connected.

DeleteBecause of the amount of crime centered television, I find it really easy to just imagine serial killers as characters on the screen, but not as actual people. It is terrifying that people who kill people for fun walk around free every single day. Hopefully, we will find more of these criminals and convict them so that less people are in danger.
