Nicholas Godfrey Period 8: Liquid Water Exists on Mars

Summary: NASA announced today that they have found liquid water flowing on Mars. This doesn't mean, however, that life exists on Mars. This provided NASA with an explanation that if there is life, how it has survived. They have also discovered that the liquid water has special chemicals in it that is allowing it to still be flowing at lower temperatures and also so it doesn't evaporate into the thin atmosphere of the planet.

Analysis: I think it is interesting that it took them so long to identify that there was water. We have sent so many drones and rovers over to Mars, that you think they would have found it before now. Although liquid water is the first step for a planet to be habitable, I don't believe that it would be ready for human life for decades until we could possibly start growing plants and such. To me this reminds me of how the Europeans must have thought about the New World. A place that they are considering future life yet it seems so far out of reach. Who knows? The Europeans settled their New World, what stops us from settling ours?

  1. I did the same topic for my current event. I really like the connection you made to the New World. I thought that was an interesting perspective.

  3. You are so right! This completely relates back to the 1600's when the settlers arrived in Jamestown. They were probably thinking they landed on Mars, even though they probably didn't know that existed;) Anyways, amazing article and amazing comparison to the Europeans.
