Period 1
Texas high school coach resigns after being accused of ordering his players to hit referee. Two players from San Antonio's John Jay High School hit a game official in the back during a high school football game. The video of the players hitting the referee has been played multiple times on Texas news channels as the story progresses. The players claim that their assistant coach, Mack Breed, ordered them to hit the referee, because the referee was calling them racist names, like the n-word. The referee issued a five-page statement denying calling the players the n-word. Before his resignation, Breed was on administrative leave and wasn't allowed to coach any future games. He insists that racial slurs are what led his players to shove the referee. The referee, Robert Watts, is contemplating a lawsuit.
There are a lot of details in this story that are unclear. There is a lot of "he said, she said" involved. Whether the accusations are true or not, racial slurs are never okay, however neither is assault. As said in the article,  the students are not toddlers and they know right from wrong. Even if ordered by a coach, one should not physical harm another purposefully. However, their coach is in a position of authority over them and they must listen to what he says. It's a sticky situation. Racism is a reoccurring action in history and today. Whether racism actually happened in this situation or not, it is a powerful enough accusation to catch the attention of the UIL and Texas news stations. Thankfully, the situation didn't end as badly as it should've and it was probably best that the coach resigned.

  1. I've seen this story on the news a lot, and I completely agree that it is confusing as to what exactly happened since there are so many different sides to the story. However, whoever is right or wrong, neither of those things, assault and racial name-calling, are justified!

  2. Racial slurs should not be acceptable. Neither should assault. Whether he did or did not it is not acceptable.

  3. This is all around messed up and it's hard to separate the truth from the lies. Either way, I agree with the previous comments, assault and racial slurs aren't appropriate by any means.
