This week, the
FDA demanded that R.J Reynolds Tobacco, one of the largest cigarette companies in
the US, stop selling four of its products. This was the first time that this
has occurred in the US. In 2009, congress gave the FDA the power to regulate
cigarettes. The products recalled were found to expose users to more harmful
forms of tobacco. In addition, several of the recalled cigarettes have
sweeteners, which increases the desire to smoke. Stores have thirteen days to
take Camel Bold Crush, Vantage Tech 13, and two types of Pall Mall Deep Set
Recessed Filter cigarettes off of the shelves. R.J. Reynolds denies that their
cigarettes are a danger to consumers. This event is similar to the events in novel
The Jungle, written by Upton Sinclair.
Sinclair uncovered the truth about the harsh conditions of meatpacking industry,
and the exploitation of immigrants. This is similar because
both industries have been exposed for harming the safety of their consumers.

this is good for our lungs but not for the pockets for the company.- Mariela Lomeli
ReplyDeleteAh yes another big tobacco company on the decline. I guess they will have to get on the vape bandwagon with everyone else.
ReplyDeleteI agree that cigarette companies should decline, but why has the FDA just stepped in? Tobacco abuse is a major problem in the US and more brands should be recalled.

ReplyDeleteI know that this hurts the company and no doubt the employees of the company but I believe it will be good for everyone in the long run as a further prevention to lung cancer.
