Dentist, Walter Palmer, who killed Cecil the lion, to return to his practice by Caroline North 9th period

After illegally killing Cecil, a prized Zimbabwe lion back in July and being disgraced by people all over the world, the dentist from Minnesota, Walter Palmer has announced he will be returning to work this Tuesday after having been in hiding for the past 6 weeks.  He spoke to the Associated Press and Minneapolis Star Tribune recently saying "I have a lot of staff members, and I'm a little heartbroken at the disruption in their lives.”  Palmer’s received an incredibly large amount of hate and grief from people and has been out of the public eye for nearly the past two months.  He says this situation has been incredibly difficult on his wife and daughter, he has grown a lot from this experience, and he never would have killed the lion had he known it had a name and was important to the country of Zimbabwe.

While I think it’s awful what Palmer did, I do sympathize for him because he has received so much hate when he was unaware that his actions were illegal.  Palmer has spoken to the press saying he never would have killed Cecil the lion had he known it was prized in Zimbabwe, and he does feel remorseful.  This whole event is important because it emphasizes what a great impact social media now has on current events.  Walter Palmer and his family members’ lives has been awful for the past 6 weeks because this story can now be so easily shared through the internet and social media sites.  With a click of a button, people can share what he did, write disgraceful things about him, and allow thousands of people to see it.  10 years ago, we did not have these resources to share in an instant and publicly shame someone for something they did so rapidly and widespread.
