Flight Attendant Fired For Not Serving Alchohol - Max Gaddis 9th period

A Muslim flight attendant on ExpressJet was suspended for not serving alchohol, even though her religion forbids her to do so. Charee Stanley has been working for ExpressJet for three years, sometime after she started working there she converted to Islam. Only this year did she discover her religion did not allow her to consume or serve alchohol. As she is a flight attendant, she talked to her supervisors and they told her to make an agreement with her co-workers, which had been working until recently. On August 2nd, a co-worker filed a complain that Stanley hadn't been pulling her weight, additionally, they complained that she had a book of "foreign writings" and wore a headscarf. Stanley's lawyer classified these comments as Islamophobic. The airline told Stanley on August 25 that they were revoking their religious accomodation and placing her on administrative leave.

I think that the comments were Islamophobic because they targeted her religion such as commenting on her Quran, hijab, and the fact that she can not serve or drink alchohol. Those directly related to her religion. This has happened more times in history than anyone can really count. People being targeted because of beliefs or because of lack of belief. This is why freedom of religion and tolerance were introduced way back in the 1600 during the colonization of the East coast by the English.

  1. That's awful! Especially just over not serving alcohol. People these days are so hateful towards things they don't understand.

  2. She should not be fired just because of her beliefs! I understand that if she worked at a bar and she could not serve alcohol; then she should be let go, but she can still do other very important tasks during the flight other than serving alcohol.

I do not agree with the rude comments made directly to this woman's religion, but I would see this matter similarly to how I see the Kim Davis issue if she was working at a bar or a club, but she isn't. I don't see why it would be hard to accommodate for her instead of just flat out firing her.
