At La Trobe University, a research on the common tobacco plant revealed a natural chemical that scientists say could be used to target and kill cancer cells in humans. The NaD1 molecule, found in the flower of tobacco plants, can fight off fungi, kill bacteria, and apparently destroy targeted cancer cells. The NaD1 molecule, having pincer like structures, can tear open cancerous cells thus killing them. Upon discovery of the unique molecule, scientists next move is to see where the molecule can be applied in treatment. Dr Hulett, one of the scientists researching the NaD1 molecule, states that the concentrated molecule may be an option to treating small scale tumors before moving to more serious procedures.
The understated irony of the article found bellow shows the diversity of organic science. The use of tobacco, a leading cause of lung, throat, and aural cancer, may have seen a change in course as the new NaD1 study may help redirect the damage tobacco does. Besides the hilariously fortunate and ironic discovery on the plant, I think this article shows the possible uses of all plant matter and the undiscovered secrets of natural science.
