Kiyanna Elliott 1,500 Mormons leaving church to protest same-sex policy, lawyer says

Summary: About 1,500 Mormons are resigning from the Church of Latter-day Saints to protest a new policy known as Handbook 1 that labels same-sex couples apostate and bans children of same-sex relationships from being baptized. One policy prohibits the natural or adopted children of parents in same-sex relationships from receiving a name and a blessing in a ceremony performed by the Mormon priesthood. In a clarification issued, the church said the policy does not affect children already baptized into the church. Attorney Mark Naugle said church members who want to resign brought the letters to his office where he will  later deliver the resignation letters symbolically to Church of Latter-day Saints headquarters in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Analysis: In recent history with the legalization of same-sex marriage and the backlash from many religious groups, it refreshing to read about a group of people taking a stand against what they feel is wrong. Knowing their history of uncommon practices in topics such as polygamy, it's not so surprising to see the people of this faith doing this. I just wish other denominations of Christianity would following in example because Christianity is supposed to be all inclusive and those new policies passed aren't.

  1. I understand people respecting their culture and beliefs, but when it interferes with someone else's individuality, I think it crosses the line between positive influence versus negative influence.

  2. I think this is great that same-sex couples are being supported by other Mormons, because it just shows how far we've come and how the views of the people are getting more and more positively shaped every day.
