Carlos Joglar- An 18 Year Climate Difference

18 years ago, a summit was held in Kyoto to discuss climate change. In the context of 1997, addressing climate change was an attempt to begin an early plan to defeat a future problem. They focused on average temperatures and water levels. Now, in 2015, climate change has been more tangible and has come much quicker than initially thought. People are also realizing its the extremes that are having the biggest effect, not averages. Despite this abrupt change, experts are, for the most part, optimistic. Also evolving at a fast pace is technology. With the advancement of technology, there is hope to discover new ways to dismiss fossil fuels from our global usage. There is also a new wave of businesses determined to do something about the state of the environment. Hopefully, these efforts will reach the masses and we will be able to turn this downward spiral in the opposite direction.

If we didn't have technology on our side, we may have been hopeless. The main issue is that, back in 1997, it was seen as a future problem when, really, it had already started and was in process. Since the Industrial Revolution, fossil fuels has been our major source of power, and one of our main goals is to wean the world off that toxin. Water also can't be an option, because with 7.5 billion people on this planet, that water needs to go to other causes. Overall, if experts are optimistic, I am too.

  1. I do agree with you in saying that we should remain optimistic about this. I don't think this should be a huge issue but definitely something to watch out for.
