"Word " of the Year -Eva Semrad

This month it was announced by Oxford Dictionary that the "word" of the year for 2015 is in fact, an emoji. The most popular emoji, comprising of about 20% of emoji use in the US and UK, is the laughing emoji:

Oxford also discusses the ever evolving text/internet vernacular that has created an entirely new dialect. This evolution comes from emojis, text, and social media, shaping the way we express ourselves in a new complicated way.

This is an incredibly important part of human development in that this sort of thing has never happened before now. There has been no need for a digital lingo, prior to digital accessibility. This year especially, we have made a major leap in human communication. The word of the year being an emoji emphasizes this matter.

  1. Wow this is interesting! It makes me wonder they selected this small image over other words, yet at the same time it's not too surprising considering how often emojis are used throughout day to day communications and media forms! -Nicole Chatham 6th period

  2. I don't really know what to do with this information because I am somewhat appalled yet at the same time a little happy. I don't know, very confused. I guess its good that we are evolving.
