Nola, a 41-year old Northern White Rhino, died at the San Diego Zoo recently. On November 13 she underwent surgery to drain a hip abscess and after that her health declined. She has brought in many spectators to the zoo since 1989. the species' population was hunted to extinction in the wild by 2008 for their prized horns. Six southern white rhinos have been brought in to be used as surrogate mothers for northern white rhino embryos. Studies are being conducted to see if the species are genetically similar enough for this experiment to work.
I'm devastated when I hear of a species going extinct, but I like to remain positive. In American history this event reminds me of the mas killing of Native Americans for the prized land, much like the rhinos prized horns. Also, many tribes were hunted to extinction much like these rhinos. The hunting of these poor animals is terrible. Do these poachers not know or not care about their actions' consequences? These animals are living, breathing creatures too.

In history, Americans seem to disregard the fact that living things are not just property and even though these rhinos can't speak they still matter. This is so devastating to hear about.
