The obesity rates in America have been rising since 1990 very steadily. Colorado (despite the munchies) is one of the least obese states and Mississippi is one of the highest. This is incredible!!! And should not be so, the government has spend millions of dollars trying to "correct" the food standards for schools and fast food restaurants... But it comes down to one thing- portion size! It's extream. If we keep moving in the direction we are the average size of a human will be about a size 15 in less then 50 years! Being plump used to be a sign of wealth being able to afford the food to make you bigger. But now because of the lack of nutrition it's a sign of poverty.
I wouldn't say that the problem is portion size, it's the fact that people don't listen to portion sizes. Naturally, they eat as much as it takes to become full and unhealthy foods are much easier to reach for than healthy foods, for convenience and price wise. Unfortunately it takes more money to produce healthy foods than to create unhealthy foods which makes one less than the other, making it an obvious choice for some. I hope we are a country can fix this problem.

ReplyDeleteI also believe its the portion sizes, and of course the fat/calorie loaded foods the cafeteria serves with a combination of little to know exercise among the students. all of this is also a financial problem, healthy foods are much more expensive and are harder to store for long periods of time.
