On Monday, September 7th, a fireball followed by a white flash streaked the sky in Bangkok mid-day. A witness got footage of the meteor from his dashcam, and when interviewed said he had never seen a shooting-star in the daylight before. Experts said that meteors are a frequent occurrence in Thailand but this one was especially big and bright. The country and it's government are undergoing chaos currently, which has led some Thais to believe that this meteor strike was ill omen.
I think that there needs to be much more light shed on meteor strikes because most people don't understand what the effects of one can really be. When most people think of a "falling star", they don't think of tiny pieces of space rock smashing into the atmosphere at 37 miles per second. It seems as though the past meteor strikes in Thailand have been harmless which is leading people to believe that they all will be this way but, this isn't the case. Meteors have the possibility of killing or injuring thousands of people, as one did in Russia in 2013. Everyone should be educated about the possible effects of meteor strikes, especially people in places where these strikes occur frequently.

Whoa! Amazing that that's how fast a meteor flies through the air. I wonder why it is that some places are more prone to meteors than others. --Eva Semrad
ReplyDeleteI completely agree because something not noticed by the human eye can really hurt you. You're perspective could be that it's far away when in reality it could strike at you any second. They should sell "Save Yourself from a Meteor Kits" at Walmart or something.
