"Is Kermit in Trouble?" Julia Plummer PD. 1

Recently, ABC Entertainment announced that "The Muppet Show" was heading in a new direction. Apparently, the show is becoming less child friendly and geared more towards adult audiences with a new, raunchy humor. This transformation is due to the belief that the classic kid's program has become "antiquated" and needs a facelift. The show has not been released on the air as of yet, but the public already has differing opinions on it. On one hand, people think that the show needs to go in this direction in order to please the public's demand for snarky humor, and on the other hand, people want to remember their favorite childhood show as a sweet and mostly innocent thing.

One big concern of many people is that since the show was originally geared for children, many parents won't know that it's taken a different turn and will let their children watch it despite the new, rawer content. Potentially, the company could end up getting into legal trouble if a joke goes overboard and an especially overprotective parent lets their child watch the show. Additionally, the people who grew up watching The Muppet Show might not see it in the same joyful light as before, thus decreasing the viewers of the show and increasing the chance of cancellation and loss of income for the people working on it.

This big change will certainly have an impact on American pop culture in the next few months, and despite the disadvantages of the show it could be an interesting thing to watch unravel.

  1. Wow i've never heard of anything like this. Generally shows are dragged out until they've lost so much money they can't go on. I think it could potentially successful and they are just appealing to their target audience, people who watched the show as kids who are now, adults

  4. Well i understand why they want to change it, and it makes sense. I just hope they do it discreetly like in older children movies? That way it appeals to most ages. -Eva Semrad

  5. I understand the sudden change in need to change or boost up the show to get more ratings because well obviously lately the kids shows are completely different then the Muppets, So they're trying to appeal to the adults that watched the show as children but I feel they need to monitor what is being said and shown on the show so it's more available to many different age groups to watch.

I find it very interesting that the muppets is taking this turn. From a marketing point of view, I can see how successful this looks and how great of an opportunity it COULD be. While this is true, I don't believe that this is a great choice from an audience perspective. I grew up watching The Muppets and I don't think that I want to watch something like this.
