Jude Holland - 2 Killed in Jacksonville Gaming Tournament Shooting

This week at a Madden (football video game) tournament, two competitors were shot and killed and nine other injured by gunman David Katz, one of the gamers, and winner of the previous contest in 2017. Several Fled the scence before some local firemen arrived to stop the shooter, only to discover Katz had committed suicide.

Analysis

This is the second shooting in Florida this year, after the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Shooting. Still, no major changes to gun control have taken place. Personally I do agree that the 2nd amendment is part of our American identity, but changes to it are long overdue. It was created for the purpose of defense by local militias, and many wanted to have the power to fight against threats such as Great Britain during the time of the Revolution. Today however, guns are much more powerful and lethal than in the 18th century, and the divides in our country along with only very simple background checks have caused guns to become a violent tool that many people have lost their lives to. I think strict background checks and a complete ban of all modern weapons of war, (not pistols and hunting rifles) should be banned from public use.

  1. I personally agree with you on how there needs to be changes to the 2nd Amendment, as it is very outdated. I also think background checks should be a lot better. I was listening to a radio talk show with my mom and many people were calling in to say they think it shouldn't be as easy to get a gun as it is.

  2. Changes do need to be made to the 2nd Amendment, as changes need to be made to much of society. The questions I think we need to be asking ourselves when we go out to make these changes are these:
    - If we change this, what are ALL the consequences that we will face, both positive and negative?
    - Is there a way to change this without causing more violence and protest?
My final thought on the matter is that the modern world encourages violence too much, as we see through our violence-tinted glasses. To prevent future shootings, we should not only make the gun laws far more strict, but we need to take a step back and analyze why we shouldn't ban guns and face challenges with the NRA as compromise for significantly lowering the possibilities of future shootings.
