Jacksonville Shooting—- Paige McManaman

One of the men shot and killed at a gaming tournament in Jacksonville, Florida, on Sunday had won the national tournament, the Madden Classic, two years ago. The other was a former high school football player who loved to play the online version of his favorite sport, and had won $51,000 in his short gaming career. These two men had futures ahead of them, but their lives were taken away. The shooting left 10 injured from gunshots and one person with a non-gunshot injury, Sheriff Mike Williams said. All of the injured are expected to survive, he said.

This section from the CNN reading about a Jacksonville shooting which relates back in history to other major shootings that impacted the world as we know it today. For example, the Sandy Hook shooting was a mass murder at the setting of just an elementary school. The kids were not given a chance to live to their full potential and to just live in general. Also, many slaves, people of color, and children were killed every single day in history which was a very significant low in America’s past. We do not want history to repeat itself in the way of murder.

  1. There have been too many instances recently where people are shot and killed when just minding their own businesses. At the many school shootings, students are just going about their classes. This is also the third shooting in Florida in recent memory, next to the Pulse nightclub shooting and the Marjory Stoneman Douglas high school shooting.

  2. I believe that it is so sad that these days we wake up and honestly don’t know if we will make it through the day. I believe it is very important to draw attention and bring awareness to these instances, and to be attentive to how we live our lives, because we can’t ever control the actions of others.

  3. It’s crazy that now there are shootings in places that have such harmless intentions like gaming. I wonder how people can look at incidents like this and ignore the concerns of public safety. Mass shootings/shootings have always been terrible and nothing is taking away from that, but when innocent people have their lives taken away because of wrong place wrong time, is there really a truly safe space for anyone? -Emma Hancock

  4. I think it is really upsetting that multiple people can be harmed and even killed at a innocent gaming tournament. What did any of those people playing in a VIDEO GAME competition do to deserve such disrespect. The number of occasions now of shootings big and small is growing exponentially. "what can we do to stop it?"

  5. John Lunzer,

The fact that one of the COMPETITORS was the shooter, and then realized what he had done and commited suicide proves that some people take things too far, but the media can't just blame it on video games like they do every time. They have to DO something about it.

Gg "SpotMePlzzz" and "Trueboy". You will be missed.

  7. I think that you had a very strong closing statement. You touched on one of the most important points of this assignment: we don't want to repeat the bad parts of history. It was a great way to end the assignment and show that you can tie all things you've learned back to the assignment.

  8. I too wrote on this situation that happened and i agree that it is something we don't want to repeat the things that happened in history. The whole situation was downing and we have to bring attention to these things.

  9. Reading the article and through many of the comments, I notice that the obvious problem is addressed in each and every one of them: gun violence. We all certainly agree that this is a huge problem in America today, but the conversation should be more about addressing solutions to the problem, not just talking about the problem itself.
