Current Event-Zander

Currently ongoing in courts across America is a case concerning the mistreatment of orphans in the custody of Christian, predominantly Catholic orphanages. Children were treated horribly and even killed due to the harsh punishments they were subjected to but nothing was done, until now. Now, survivors across the U. S. are speaking up and making their story heard.

I think we've been desensitized to horrible things being reported on in the news. It has become commonplace for horrific tragedies to be the top story of the day. Knowing this, one might think I would have little problem reading this article. However, nothing could be further from the truth. It felt like every paragraph I had to pause to process what I had been told. The things done to these children were so brutal, so graphic but most strikingly of all, so pointless. Supposed protectors of human life were instead taking it away without so much as a second thought. The things done by the children never merited the crime. It seemed to have little motivation except for exercising of power. In this way, it reminded me of the conversion native children were forced to endure. They were sent to birding school, forbidden from speaking their native tongue or practicing their religion and their hair was shorn. This was often by governmental command, for little to no reason. It was simply a way to force these children to assimilate and abuse their power with children who didn't know any better at the center of it.
