Amazon to build homeless shelter in new Seattle HQ

Summary: Amazon has announced that as part of their new Seattle headquarters they will include a homeless shelter which will be able to house about 200 homeless people. Amazon has partnered with the local Seattle nonprofit "Mary's Place" in the past to house and feed homeless people in their empty buildings and are funding the housing of homeless people in a former hotel until the new shelter can be made. Amazon also has a function where people can purchase items on the Mary's Place wishlist, such as diapers and socks, which will go straight to the shelter, allowing people to get what they need.

Analysis: I think it's inspiring to see companies use their time and money to support worthy causes. It is so easy to become disillusioned with our capitalist society due to all the corruption that can be easily seen in the upper levels of both large businesses and politics. However, things like this where companies use their money to help people in need instead of funding their higher-ups it seems like a little ray of light. This can be synthesized to Andrew Carnegie and his "Gospel of Wealth" where he funded many public works projects with his large fortune instead of hoarding it all for himself and his family.

  1. This is so good to hear that Amazon is doing something so responsible and helping those in need. It would be nice to see a trend like this continue with other companies.
