Chloe Dupuy- Trump on same-sex marriage and Roe v. Wade

Synopsis- Donald Trump is not shy about his beliefs, especially when it comes to social issues such as same-sex marriage and abortion. Since his election as president, he has now stated that the Supreme Court decision on gay marriage is "settled", but that the issue of abortion is still on the table. The Supreme Court case Roe v. Wade ruled that not allowing women to make the decision on whether or not they get an abortion was unconstitutional. This means that abortion cannot be completely outlawed by any states in the U.S.. Trump is not a fan of this decision, and says that he wants to elect Supreme Court justices that will work to reverse this action.

Analysis: This news makes me furious. The Roe v. Wade decision was a huge step forward in women's rights. The fact that Trump is already looking to take this away from us, not even a week after his election, is maddening. As a woman I am comforted by the fact that if I do not want to carry a child to term, I have access to procedures such as abortion. If this right is taken away, an uncountable number of women will be forced to care for an unwanted child inside of them. Either that, or they will seek out illegal and dangerous methods of aborting the fetus on their own. This could lead to the deaths and injuries of not just the unborn, but the mothers as well.

Synthesis: This news synthesizes to the Supreme Court case of Brown v. The Board of Education. This decision stated the segregation of schools based on race was unconstitutional. This was a ginormous step forward in the fight for equal rights, just like Roe v. Wade. If that decision have been overturned, imagine how different our lives would be today.

  1. I think Donald Trumps views on women are just all around awful. For me being a woman as well, I don't fully trust any man on their views on abortion, they don't have to go through it. What do they know? It's scary that we have come so far in our nation and now we are just going backwards with Trump's views.

  2. I'm really appalled to hear how Donald is so nonchalant about taking the rights of women away. As a woman, I feel very disrespected and scared. What if i needed an urgent abortion? I wrote about this topic as well :).

  3. Trump is so willing to take away women's rights after activists worked so hard over the past centuries for these equal rights. This reminds me of activists like Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and the Seneca Falls Convention to remind us how hard we worked as a nation for these rights.

  4. I think Trump has proved his disregard for women's rights through his "locker talk" and the assault and rape cases against him. A man like this shouldn't be able to decide anything about women and their rights, such as abortion. He has expressed his unpopular opinions and as long as he stands by them, people will continue to fight for what's right, as they should.

  5. This!! Grinds!! My!! Gears!! I cannot and will not ever (nor make the effort to) understand how anyone could ever argue that abortion is evil and should not exist. It is the woman's choice. Always. Period. No questions asked. Being forced to have a child, especially at a young age, could completely ruin a woman's life, be her in school, work, or simply struggling to support herself financially. If a woman and the hypothetical child would both be better off if the child was terminated, then why take that right of choice away? Why force people to live miserably when it isn't necessary?
