Claire Zimmerman: "Parents Settle Over Toddler's Mauling Death at Pittsburgh Zoo"

A while ago, a two year old was mauled to death by African Wild Dogs when he fell over the railing of the overlook of the exhibit. The family came to an agreement with the zoo over what they will receive in return, however, they refuse to share the terms of this agreement with the public in order to keep the memory of the child undeterred. However, the zoo does not say that it was in the wrong, and that all of their railings passed the safety regulations, and that the incident was the fault of the parents.

I think that was a good choice on the part of the family. You don't want people, when they think of this incident, to think of how much money the family received rather than the child's memory. And I believe that this is not the fault of either the zoo or the parents. The zoo should not leave any safety procedures in the dust, and the parents should not have lifted their kids up for a better view. Things happen sometimes, and we should spend less time blaming people and more time figuring out how to make the zoo a safer place.
