Two out of five members of the "Fierce Five" olympic gymnasts allege abuse. It started last month when McKayla Maroney said Larry Nassar sexually abused her under the disguise of "necessary medical attention." This "necessary treatment" started at the age of 13 and followed Maroney through the 2012 olympics. In an interview she explained that, "It seemed that wherever and whenever this man could find the chance, I was 'treated'." She also described an incident with him as the scariest night of her life. Shortly after McKayla Maroney came forward, Aly Raisman followed. Raisman was first treated by Nassar at the age of 15, and is angry about the culture that allowed the abuse to go on. Both girls agreed that it was time to speak up. Unfortunately, these two girls aren't alone, dozens of women have accused Nassar of sexual misconduct. Nassar faces 22 counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct and 11 counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct at the state level.
I can't believe these gymnasts had to experience this for so long. It is disappointing to think that Larry Nassar was ever apart of the USA gymnastics team. The issue of sexual abuse seems to have increased lately, and it needs to be stopped. Thankfully, USA Gymnastics adopted a series of reforms in June that said
it will better prevent and respond to future cases of abuse.

It’s sad that this happened for so long without attention. I hope this man gets what he deserved.
ReplyDeleteOlivia Wall- Wow! That is awful and very sad to think that so many people have been abused by a doctor. It is crazy to think that two of them were Olympians.
ReplyDeleteOur own Olympians have been abused and been silent about it for so long, we need to continue to encourage the abused to speak up.
ReplyDeleteIt's so shocking to see the reality that absolutely anyone can suffer from sexual abuse. I can only hope that more precautions are taken so that these incidents won't occur.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the fact that the issue of sexual abuse seems to have increased lately, and it needs to be stopped.
ReplyDeleteThis is terrible! Who would have thought that our own Olympians were sexually and physically abused, and they havent come out and let people know about it. This is a serious issue that needs to be spoken about.
