Larsen Nichols-George H.W Bush accused of sexual assault

Last Tuesday, actress Heather Lind accused former President George H.W Bush of touching her inappropriately during a photo op a few years ago. Jim McGrath (The former-president's former spokesman) issued a statement defending Bush in saying that because of his confinement to a wheelchair, his arm naturally falls around the lower waist of someone next to him, and sometimes he pats women's rears with a good-natured intention. Apparently, it was never his intent to cause anyone distress, and he said Bush apologized for offending anyone.

First of all, this apology would've been a lot more meaningful if Bush had issued it himself. I understand that at 93 he's probably a little too old to use social media, but the least his team could've done was publish an apology under his name. Realistically, I bet Bush is just hanging out in his big house somewhere, not having any idea what's happening. Second of all, I'm a little infuriated that he didn't actually take accountability to say that what he did was wrong. He just apologized for "offending anyone" and claimed that it was "good-natured". No. When you get outed for something like this, the proper response is to own up to it and directly apologize for your actions. Third of all, I'm angry that anyone would think it's okay to pat a woman on the butt without her consent, especially a woman you don't even know, and even MORE especially during a photograph when she feels pressured to keep smiling and acting like everything's fine. Also, his wife was right beside him during the photo? This is just bad and inappropriate on every level imaginable. I'm just glad that Lind was brave enough to speak out about it.
Synthesis: This article can be connected to situations on slave plantations where slave women were raped or sexually assaulted by their white masters. That was also non-consensual, and they were pressured into it because they weren't in any position of power to say no.

  1. I agree that a spoken apology from him would've given a little bit more confirmation. If it happened so long ago, why wasn't it said then?

  2. I agree that he personally should of spoke out for what he did and make an apology. It would of also been nice to see a former president condone this type of treatment.

  3. This is so gross. We need to start teaching boys at a young age to stop doing stuff like this
