New Barbie Wears Hijab: Hannah Karim

The company that produces Barbie dolls has recently announced that the newest doll in their most recent collection is resembling Olympic fencer Ibithaj Muhammad. Muhammad says she is “proud to know that little girls everywhere can now play with a Barbie who chooses to wear a hijab”. These Barbies will be released in early 2018.
I think this is important to history because this is a step in humanizing people who are so often duhmanized based on the sole way of how they practice their religion. Muslims have been oppressed for a long time, and though small, this could be effective.

  1. I love this! Representation is necessary for everyone, especially young children who face oppression in their lives. This is an amazing step towards defeating islamophobia and helping to change Muslim children's lives.

this is amazing! It's so important that representation of everyone from all over the world is present. It can teach young kids not to discriminate against others because of their religion, we're all people, and I'm happy to see this step in the right direction!

  5. It's nice seeing an acceptance of Islamic culture, especially after the french burkini ban from earlier this year.

  6. It's definitely important for children of all backgrounds, cultures, and religions to see themself in pop culture and toys. Diversity should be celebrated, especially when it comes to the next generation and future of the US.
