As a person who has dreams of someday working in Hollywood, AND as a person who looks up to Kevin Spacey as an inspiration, the news of these past few weeks have scarred and hurt me to the core. It has, unfortunately, made me reconsider my want to work in Hollywood. The last thing I want in the world, ever, is to be making myself vulnerable to people, in a creative space, and be assaulted and preyed upon. It fills me with fear to know that I could be in that place one day. Pedophilia is a topic that is only slightly touched on in our world today. For this blog post, I would like to focus on the diagnosis of pedophilia on patients. An Austrian neurologist, Sigmund Freud, began to write about this topic in his 1905 book Three Essays on the Theory of Sexuality. He wrote that exclusive pedophilia was rare and only occasionally were prepubescent children exclusive objects. He wrote that they usually were the subject of desire when a weak person "makes use of such substitutes" or when an uncontrollable instinct which will not allow delay seeks immediate gratification and cannot find a more appropriate object. However, I don't know if I completely agree with this, and I know I'm not the only person who thinks that Freud's ideology is problematic. However, he does believe that a person's personality is based on three principles of the mind, based on events that have happened to you: the id, ego, and superego. However, the point of this article is to point out that many people are losing their jobs over a case of pedophilia. This just goes to show that in sexual assault cases, it's not just the victim that is affected in the outcome.
