The controversial keystone pipeline is leaking more oil than predicted during it's construction in 2010. They predicted that no more than 50 barrels of oil would spill the entire length of the pipeline, and predicted a spill about every 41 years. The most recent spill was a leakage of about 5,000 barrels or 210,000 gallons of oil on agricultural land in Amherst SD. This recent development draws attention to the controversial extension of the keystone pipeline that was green lighted by the Trump administration.
This is not really a huge surprise, I mean everyone was skeptical of the keystone pipelines original construction, and for good reason. All their fears have been realized, and refusing to face straight up facts Donald Trump ones again gives a big middle finger to the environment and expands the already failing oil pipeline. It's honestly frightening how no one in the government right now is interested in helping oppose climate change considering the irreparable damage we've already caused.
This shouldn't come as a surprise considering according to business insider in the 6 years from 2010 to 2016 more than 9 million gallons of oil has been spilled in the US alone; it's time to figure out that this kind of piping is dangerous and no longer economically viable.
