This week the three star Lieutenant General, Jeffrey Buchanan is ordered by Puerto Rico’s Gov. Ricardo Rosselló to remove American troops from Puerto Rico, of which were there to aid citizens after Hurricane Maria hit the small island. Though, many disregard his choice as a mistake, since 1 in 10 homes lack water and food, also power has not been fully restored, causing problems to worsen. Plant life is slowly restoring and San Juan and a couple small towns have gained power once again, but the growing need for medical attention and survival needs is still a looming threat for the damaged island. Many Puerto Rican citizens fear that they have not fully over come the disaster and still need help from the main land, but the problem is that the US is slowly transitioning the reasonability from their hands to the National Guard. Things are slowly getting better now though, roads have been opened back up, so the 72 helicopters that were flying in resources, have now been reduced to 14, also, surprisingly the amount of patients attending the USNS Comfort hospital ships has lessened.
Since Puerto Rico is technically part of America, the US should be responsible for aid in its recovery, and while the US put some effort into this, the island was mostly disregarded and left to its own to rebuild its self. It selfish and unfair, Puerto Rico was already an extremely impoverished island to begin with, and held a low standard of living, but with the hurricane thing only got worse. If Puerto Rico couldn’t rise above its low income levels by its self, how does the US expect the territory to fully recover after a devastating hurricane? It’s great of America to lend Puerto Rico a hand, but if we wish for them to rise past their former glory, we really need to step in and do more than we have.
