Connor Norton - China’s panda-shaped solar plant is part of a bigger challenge facing Trump

The gist: China has recently been promoting a big increase in solar power and other forms of renewable energy in an attempt to gradually faze out fossil fuels, both for ecological and economical reasons. This push by a major world power is putting pressure on the US, another country of such stature, to take similar action in order to assure that we can compete with China in the evolving energy industry, specifically concerning renewable energy; however, the president's continued rhetoric on the subject of coal and mining jobs suggests that an advancement in our energy industry would have to be led by consumers willing to seek out and pay for reliable and environmentally friendly energy.

This relates to the industrial revolution, as the initial advancement began in competing Great Britain before their dominance in the textile industry and increasing quality of life (in terms of material wealth) pushed America to replicate and continue said revolution. Still, we as a country were much more receptive to advances then than we are now, so how we react to outside pressures remains to be seen.

  1. As we advance into the future, we must realize that coal is an old and unreliable energy source. Part of our country's recalcitrant behavior towards energy sources will be our undoing, in an ecological and economic perscpetive

    1. I agree that it will be unfortunate but not an undoing, especially not from an economic perspective. I believe that we should put more of an emphasis on finding new sources and ways to get energy for less money and resources. Then we can start building factories

  2. Thank you China for being proactive in saving our planet! They're setting an example for other powerful countries of the world, and I hope that people (especially the US) follow it.
