Political messages on food receipts- Camryn Stafford

summary:
Mark Simmons, top chef alumn and owner of Kiwiana restaurant in Brooklyn has added a statement on the bottom of the receipt paper that reads "Immigrants make America great (they also cooked your food and served you today.)" Simmons, who moved from New Zealand to America ten years ago, created this note soon after Trump's "muslim ban" and claims that he was simply practicing his freedom of speech.

analysis:
Although Simmons is not one of the targeted immigrants, he still finds it necessary to speak up against those who are direct targets of the ban. He is a perfect example of using your platform to speak up against wrongful actions. The note on the bottom of the receipt has only become relevant after 700,000 shares on social media. The article was written not to bring to light the message but most likely to explain the reasoning for it becoming so popular. Although the message is only one sentence long, it briefly provides guilt for those who are justifying sending the immigrants out. It shows that they are beneficial to the country even in small ways. This can be related to clever campaigning first used throughout presidential elections.
