What We Need: A Scholarship Only for White Men - Cal Thompson, 1st period

Milo Yiannopoulos has created a grant limited to white men. While this grant does not exclude base upon sexuality,Yiannopoulos (who is gay) is known for being against LGBTQ+ rights and claims his orientation is a choice. Many people have protested against his scholarship, but it does have some support.

Ah yes. Because white men have really been the underdog.

Let's break it down.

European ideals of pale skin have spread from continent to continent. Colorism is visible from beauty product advertisements to standards to casting choices in popular films. Patriarchal social structure still rules most of the globe. Corporations purposefully put women in high positions right before a predicted crash to spread the idea that women are incapable of business success and hour not be oven those positions. In the past, white men were the only ones in America able to participate in politics, an were, for the most part, the only ones owning property (or anything, really). This "balance" of wealth has bled through to today, where elderly white men hold the power because of inheritance and mysoginistic standards.

There are plenty of scholarships that are available regardless of whether or not one is a minority. Scholarships specifically for minorities function to allow those people to actually attend college- many minorities come from poor families, or are shunned by their families (such as LGBTQ+ individuals).

It's not about saying "hey let's keep this away from those white guys," it's about saying "hey, let's provide aid to the people who aren't privileged in today's society and are very likely to need such aid." This scholarship for white men is saying the opposite- "hey, let's show those minorities who's boss."

White men are already being rewarded just for being white men, from higher pay, to hiring preference, to the fact that there are more acting opportunities for men than for women, to not being catcalled in the streets, constantly sexually assaulted because of their clothing, or murdered by police  (who face little legal repercussions, and are often white men- in fact, when one of the officers who shot and killed a black man in the streets was finally convicted for a serious charge, guess what? The officer was a woman- not that she should not have been convicted, but she should certainly not have been one of the first) for looking "intimidating"  (yeah, I went there).

If this is riddled with typos, I'm sorry. I'm typing on my phone and autocorrect hates me.

  1. In my opinion the scholarship is unessary. We don't need a scholarship for a group of people who already have the privilege of like EVERYTHING.

  2. This is insane. Even the thought of this man belittling the fight for LGBTQIA+ rights when he himself identifies as homosexual is astounding to me. And there is absolutely no need for this scholarship in today's society. I hate this world.

  3. This, among other events that have shown up often with the election of trump, has really shown how divided our views are still to this day.
