Kyla Thomas (1st Period)- Marine veteran battles flesh-eating bacteria: 'It was life over limb'

Summary: This article is about a young woman who was diagnosed with a flesh eating bacteria that spread to her back. Her name is Cindy Martinez and she joined the Marines when she was just 17 years old. The real challenge not only came from the post trauma that she experienced in the marines but it was when she got married and had kids that her strength was put to the test. It is unknown as to how she contracted this infection in the first place since there are no visible wounds on her body, but indeed she was diagnosed with necrotizing fasciitis. Her husband was told by doctors that it would either be her life taken or her limbs, and as expected, he chose his wife. When the operation was over, she has a hard time coming to terms that both legs below the knee, her right arm above the elbow and portions of all the fingers on her left hand were gone. She is now finding new strength and is learning how to walk and lift with her new limbs.

Analysis: This article starts off very disappointing and sad, but it ends on a very positive note, showing how she overcame what seemed like the impossible. It's incredible that this woman was able to live to tell this story herself. Not only is her story inspirational to others who may discouraged by their health conditions, but there is a message that anyone can take from Cindy Martinez's story. No matter how much it may seem that the odds are stacked against us, it is possible to overcome. In relation to US History, diseases have been present throughout. Diseases have completely wiped out thousands of population in certain places and times.
