Ethics Scandal in the Trump Administration (Who Would've Thought?) - Kate Kahle

Kellyanne Conway went on FOX news recently and promoted Donald Trumps Daughter, Ivanka's clothing line. This is clearly illegal, and a conflict of interest. Donald Trump has apologized for Conway's actions, but this may just be the tip of the iceberg of corruption of the nascent Trump Administration. Chairman Chaftez says he is confident that there is no conflict of interest in Trumps administration and he is not going to go fishing looking for corruption. This choice is being harshly criticized by his constituents. The Emoluments Clause (which says the president is unable to accept gifts from foreign governments) has almost definitely been broken already by the administration. Trumps Security Advisor has also almost definitely broken the Logan Act when he discussed sanctions with the Russian ambassador before Trump was elected.
The outrage over Kellyanne Conway's comments, which, while illegal, weren't really that serious in the scheme of things, is just a way that republicans are trying to appear fair and reasonable while ignoring bigger corruption issues taking place in the White House. They are raising outrage over tiny things instead of getting the courage up to object to far more serious issues. If republicans want to retain the shred of ethical credibility they have left, then they should start taking the Trump Administration's many real problems more seriously.

  1. This is definitely no surprise to me. I wish that it already wasn't happening but this is just a sign of what Trump's presidency will be like.
