Emma Sutherland - Hamilton stars add 'sisterhood' to 'America the Beautiful'

SUMMARY:
As the Super Bowl LI was kicking off, the original cast members from Hamilton, Phillipa Soo, Renee Elise Goldsberry, and Jasmine Cephas Jones (known as The "Schuyler Sisters"), reunited as they performed "America the Beautiful". However, they added a little twist to the last few lines, ultimately sending a very powerful feminist message. In the lines, "And crown thy good with brotherhood / from sea to shining sea", they added the lines, "and sisterhood" after brotherhood! Many went wild in the crowd and later on social media, as this addressed the recent women's battle for rights, displayed through the recent worldwide marches. Many are talking of adding these lyrics into the song themselves, and many well-known people have commented on this action on social media.

ANALYSIS:
Before I read this article, I had been aware of the current fight for women's rights, and how it has sparked since President Trump's inauguration into presidency. I, myself, watched the Super Bowl and was very surprised when they added in those lines, but felt it had been done in a very classy and respectful manner. It's a very fitting gesture for them, considering their role in Hamilton, which is based off of U.S. History. I wouldn't be surprised if critical remarks surface regarding the appropriateness of changing the lyrics of such an iconic and patriotic song, however I can appreciate that they took a stand for women's rights at such an event like this.

  2. I also agree the way they did this in a very appropriate manner. I think it's hard to acknowledge women's equality through such songs because they were written so long ago, when women were seen as inferior to men.
