Planet X: XTREME DESTRUCTION - Cal Thompson, 1st Period

This article, published on January 4, 2017, details conspiracy theorists' speculations on our planet's eminent demise. An alleged "Planet X" is said to be approaching the earth at an angle that makes it rather difficult to view. Theorists point to longer heat waves and more intense natural disasters as evidence of the approaching large mass, which some believe to be a star.

It's unlikely that the world will end in 2017 (at least in a literal sense) unless Donald over there keeps up the trigger-happy attitude he's shown with executive orders and applies that to the missile codes. However, there is almost always a chance that any given conspiracy theory has some measure of truth. I try very hard to take everything I read with a grain (if not a tablespoon) of salt. But we cannot use the increase in natural disasters as definite proof that there is a large planet on a collision course with earth- that's false cause fallacy, like saying "some lizards are orange, and something being orange may mean that it is a lizard. Dinosaurs were often human-size, and essentially giant lizards- they could've been orange. Donald Trump is orange, and often human-size. Therefore, Donald Trump is essentially a giant lizard." It may seem plausible, but there is no definite connection between the data points. It is only a possible cause.

We have believed that the world was soon to end quite a few times in the past, and it obviously hasn't (unless you're for the theory that it has, and all we experience is a hallucination, or that we have switched to an alternate reality). 2000 came and went, and with each recent predicted end of the world, Ghostbusters has raked in profits. And if there is some Planet X approaching at an alarming rate, what can we do? Live.

So go outside (or not, if fresh air and sunlight makes you miserable- I won't judge). Because whether there is or isn't a planet on its way to kill us all, life is short. We all die, probably (again, more conspiracy theories- what is death? Is this real?), and we could all die at any moment. We can't see everything that will happen tomorrow, but we can try to make the most of it. We can stand up for what we believe in, and we can live with the knowledge that we have done something.

And hey, if the world does end this year, Trump will have served an extremely short term, so that's something.

And just in case reading this has given you the start of an existential crisis, a man walking by my home in Deep Ellum just barked drunkenly at my dogs. He said no words, only spewing a poor imitation of a canine. Thank you, drunk bark man. You made my day better.
