Mom tapes child on the wall- Camryn Stafford

summary:
Eighteen year old mom, Shayla Rudolph, posted on Facebook live an unfortunate punishment of her two-year-old son. She taped him up on the wall by the wrists with packing tape and later covered his mouth with the tape. Her son was later taken into custody by Franklin County Children's Services after they visited Rudolph about the incident. Her live session on Facebook has served as a key piece of evidence for the case and for the future prosecution.

analysis:
CNN reported on this event but until I saw it on their website I had no previous knowledge of the event even though thousands of people had viewed the first and second post by this young mother.  The local story takes on a national audience when CNN picks up the story and broadcasts it to millions of viewers.  The way that social media feeds national stories and how social media provides evidence in cases like this continues to show how the world of news and current events is evolving.

This article was written first because of how ridiculous this appears to people viewing how this mother is almost recommending this treatment but the amazing follow up video is the true reason for the story, that even after warned by child protective services this mother states on Facebook that is fully aware that what she is doing is wrong and that she doesn't care if she loses her child in the process. There are many main points that people can draw from the story both from the local posting level to the national story line.  First main point is that even a local lapse of judgment can be picked up and broadcast to the world and you may be held accountable for a thought even if shared with a small circle initially.  The other main point is that social media is evergreen and is the basis of evidence for prosecution and defense.  The third main point is that national media is being aggressive finding stories that are relevant but rooted in social media.

This document is relevant to our lives today because school yard fights or classroom bullying that may have been punishable only by a principle or parent 10 years ago is now subject to scrutiny and punishment by anyone who sees the story.

  1. I am aghast at this story. Parents should not treat their children like that. I would also like to point out the reactions of many upon hearing of this, as well as other stories of abuse- horrified fascination. As humans, we are intrigued by suffering. Just throwing that out there.

  2. I did this same article! I found it terrifying that parents would not only treat their children like this, but post it LIVE onto social media! I am glad that many were able to realize Rudolph's wrongdoing, and that something is being done about it!

  3. This is absolutely horrific, taping a child to the wall is no way to punish them!

  4. Not only did this mom think it would be okay to tape a living breathing child to the wall but also live stream it. Disgusting. My thoughts are with the child.
