Miracle on 93rd Street: NY firefighters attempt "last resort" rescue by Macey Kanaman 8th Period
Summary: Jim Duffy was recently saved by a fire a month ago on 93rd St in New York. The FDNY had to use a very risky method of saving this man due to the difficult circumstances of the situation. There was no fire escape to his apartment and the 35 foot ladder could not reach Duffy's apartment on the 5th floor. The firefighters had to use a rope rescue which is usually avoided because of the dangers involved. However in this instance it proved to save this man's life. Firefighters who had never worked together saved Duffy's life.
Analysis: I think this shows how important firefighter training is very important. Even though they rarely use the rope rescue, they still learn it just in case for instances like this. Organized groups like the FDNY save many people's lives everyday. Back when these organizations didn't exist many people probably lost their lives to fires. It is great that the FDNY and many other fire departments exist today to help citizens.
