Lauren Brady P4 January 29, 2017 Moldy Sheets at Two Pittsburgh Hospitals Causes 5 Deaths
5 people in the transplant units of two University of Pittsburgh Medical Center hospitals have died from rhizopus mold. Normally, that stain of mold is common and not harmful, but in patients who have a weakened immune system already, it can cause pneumonia, which can lead to death. The Paris Healthcare Linen Facility handles the sheets for the hospitals. After investigating the facility, findings show that heavy buildups of the rhizopus mold and lint were on or around the sheets that went to the University of Pittsburgh hospitals. There are lawsuits currently in action against the Paris Linen Facility.
This is really disturbing. People should be able to trust a hospital's cleanliness, especially people who have recently had a major surgery, like a transplant, and are at a high risk for infections. Paris Linen should be shut down for their subpar facility that has caused 5 deaths. It must be so heartbreaking for the families of those dead, who thought that their loved ones would be alright after the traumatic surgery, only to have them dead from moldy linens. In the early years of the Industrial Revolution in Britain, technology slowly spread to America, but would not take off until after the Civil War. In an attempt to sell products, American manufacturers would make low-quality products and stamp them with the British seal because British products were of high quality. The low quality and conditions of the linens made by the Paris Co., are reminiscent of the early scams of American manufacturers.
