A high school student is recently being charged with assault and battery after throwing a paper airplane that hit his teacher in the eye. The student said that he was attempting to hit the teacher in the head, but instead ended up hitting him in the eye. The school has made many statements saying that whether or not charges will be placed depends entirely on law enforcement. Although throwing the paper airplane is against school policy, the principal said that law enforcement has the capability to press charges should they choose to. This is relevant to me because, as a high school student, there are many rights that, were I not on school property, I would be able to exercise freely. Outside of school, someone throwing a paper airplane that accidentally hit someone in the eye would barely classify as an altercation, however in school, this is viewed as assault and battery. It leads me to believe that there are many other small issues that could be escalated to much larger scales, and as a student, it is important for me to know which rights I am able to maintain.
