At Robert W. Coleman Elementary School in West Baltimore, students who act out or misbehave in class are sent to a meditation room, rather than detention. This room is what the school calls it's "Mindful Moment Room", where students have time to take deep breaths, do some yoga, and enjoy pleasurable scents of essential oils. The students at this school have rough lives at home and have trouble expressing emotions, so this room provides not only a place for them to feel safe, but it gives them a change to practice juggling irrational emotions. Not only is this area a place for them to cool off, but they almost take real world skills to learn how to mentally calm themselves out of the classroom. This has benefited most of the children at the school, including Dacari Crawford, age 9, who says, "When I get mad at something or somebody, I just take some deep breaths, keep doing my work and tune everyone out."
I am very impressed with this idea and how mature these young children are mentally developing. When I was a kid, the only solution I knew of when I upset was to yell or cry, and it took me awhile to learn what I need to do to calm myself, so it is very impressive that young kids are learning this skill so quickly. I also think it is a much better solution to irrational behavior because the room serves more as a friendly, happy environment rather than a punishment, this way kids can learn that it's okay and normal to have bad days as long as they can pull themselves down to peace.

This is a really big leap for our school system. Happy mind = a mind eager to learn. It's great they are keeping a healthy mental state.
ReplyDeleteI honestly think that this is such a good idea. I've already commented on one post about this, but I really think this is a good thing.
