Stephanie Toribio-Georgia Mom Threatened With Arrest

On Sunday night, mother of two Savannah Shukla of Muscogee County in Columbus, Georgia was leaving the checkout after grocery shopping when her one month old baby began to get fussy. She began to breastfeed the baby, but was soon approached by a sheriff's deputy who asked her to cover up because some might find her actions "offensive". Shukla retaliated by saying,"I'm not doing anything wrong...if somebody finds it offensive, that's on them, not on me". She then told the deputy that she was by LAW allowed to breastfeed in public, quoting Georgia legislation.

"...A mother may breast-feed her baby in any location where the mother and baby are otherwise authorized to be."

The deputy then became frustrated with Shukla and began to threaten arrest.

"Ma'am, see, I can already see your areola, and if he unlatches and shows nipple, that is considered indecent exposure..."

Sheriff John Darr then posted on Facebook his response to the deputy's actions.

"Our office does not condone these actions and will ensure all officers know and understand the law...I would like to personally extend an apology to the woman involved...these are not the opinions or practices of the office as a whole."

Shukla filed an offical complaint on Monday, hoping that other women won't experience the same thing.

Analysis:
This is a rather long post, but I couldn't just read/watch the video without feeling like I needed to say something about it. It enrages me whenever I see women being attacked for things like this. A while back, another woman was being shamed for breastfeeding her baby at a Target, but luckily was defended by other shoppers, and the attacker was escorted off the premises. Nowadays women can't do anything, not even take care of her baby, without being criticized for it. We wear long skirts and long-sleeved shirts, we're boring. We wear short dresses and heels, we're asking for it. This is madness, and it needs.to.stop.
