Synopsis: A memorial for Emmett Till was recently defaced. The medium for this vandalism, was bullet holes. The sign which marks the site where the body of Emmett Till was shot at more than 40 times. The marker has already been restored once after being damaged in 2008, and once again locals are having to raise money to get it fixed.
Analysis: Emmet Till was a 14-year-old African American male that was brutally assaulted and murdered in 1955 for reportedly whistling at a white woman. Two men (white) were charged with the crime, but were found guilty by a jury (also white). This injustice was a major event in the civil rights movement, and helped to lead to vital reformations of society. The fact that someone has the temerity to ravage the memorial of an innocent young man, is horrendous. Especially when this person was viciously attacked and murdered for something as simple as a whistle, and moreover, when the people responsible for his death were never punished for the act. This just shows the unbelievable amount of ignorant racism that still exists in our country
Synthesis: This event is a almost too reminiscent of the countless of assaults, killings, and lynchings that took place before and during the civil rights movement. For over too long Africans were treated as less than human, and it's believed that this mind set has changed since then. This act of destruction just shows that there are some people who haven't, and may never, change.

Well written. I agree with everything you said in your analysis.
ReplyDeleteI agree. It's awful that a person would do something like this. I can't believe there are people out there who would go so far as to deface a memorial to another person.
