Sophia Jalilvand: California Guard vets told to repay millions in enlistment bonuses

Summary: Many United States war veterans had been planning to retire. However, they were persuaded by the US government to reenlist. They were drawn to the veteran bonus; they would get around $15,000. However, years later, soldiers are now realizing that they did not meet the requirements for the bonus to begin with. They needed to have a specific task (for example, civil affairs or intelligence), so the US government is asking for its money back. California is currently demanding veterans to pay their debt: over 9,700 families are financially suffering. Sergeants lied to soldiers they knew did not meet the bonus requirements because they were desperate to reach their enlistment requirements.

Analysis: This is a truly terrible occurrence. It is awful that the people of the United States that have risked their lives to protect their country are now being punished for something that was not their fault in the slightest. Our people are being taken advantage of, and it is concerning to think about how few people are going to want to enlist the next time that we need it. The government should not be taking advantage of their soldiers, as we will slowly lose our military. Who knows, we might even have to start drafting an entire army again.

  1. It is one of the most horrendous things to take advantage of the military. They give their lives to protect us, and we thank them by lying to them and taking their hard earned money. It is simply outrageous that they were lied to in order to make them reenlist and now they do not get paid for it. It really shows the direction the America is going in that we cannot even respect our heroes who work to keep our freedom.
