Summary:
Lately South Korea has been going through physical appearance problems. Especially the women---they have an "expectation" to live up to the ideal Korean woman. People say there is no perfection in this world but to the Koreans, there is, and that is all you can be. Basically all the women get surgeries if they have "imperfections" according to the public. They promote all these signs and phone numbers to call if they want to get a certain surgery and sadly many women go through with the procedure. Most of the women in Korea end up getting this because they feel the need to blend in with society and not be themselves. Even men suffer from this problem, seeing themselves as an individual and not as the rest of the population of men. It's not as common but it is still happening, and most people who walk by these signs are also children, thats influencing them to become something they are not and become like the rest of the population.
Analysis:
I think that this article is very saddening to me because when you were a child your parents taught you to be yourself and embrace who you are and not try to be someone else. These adults and children are doing the exact opposite. Maybe this is just because they live in a different country, but I know that most of the people in the united states get plastic surgery or any type of surgery to benefit themselves… they don't try to please others, they do it to please themselves and do something for them. It is truly based on their decision not the societies. This article is similar to when the women on farms had so many expectations, they cooked, cleaned, made clothes, took care of the children, and also worked. Maybe their physical appearance didn't have to change, but hey had to live up to an expectation and if those expectation weren't reached they had consequences. Personally, I think changing your physical being for the good of others is not okay. If they don't accept you for who you are then maybe you should consider re-evaluating your friends.

Kiri Luckey: Women are always going to have expectations that are unfair! They see us as one when really we are all unique and different in our own way.
ReplyDeleteThe extremity that this appears to have reached in South Korea is very disheartening. However, I beg to differ on your statement that plastic surgery in the United States is ultimately a personal choice. We are constantly being manipulated into viewing certain physical attributes as desirable over others, and women are confronted with this every day (turn on the television and you'll see about one "average" woman for every ten that are considered "flawless," and open a magazine and you'll find photoshopped figures galore). I'm not saying that men here do not face similar problems, but it's definitely worse for omen because they are often treated as if these physical attributes are their best features rather than their personalities. What's going on in South Korea is most certainly an issue, but it is hardly shocking considering the ideals we can see perpetuated from all sides in the U.S.

Why are women still created unfairly when it clearly says "All men and women should be created equal at Senaca Fall Convention
