The US Department of Agriculture has approved the commercial planting of two genetically modified types of potatoes. The potatoes still have to be reviewed and approved by the FDA and the US Environmental Protection Agency, the companies expecting approval in January. These new potatoes should reduce waste and use of pesticides, have reduced bruising, enhance cold storage, and be immune to the pathogen that caused the Irish potato famine. There is no evidence that GMOs are unsafe to consume, but it raises an ethical issue for many people.
This article was written to inform the reader that these genetically modified potatoes are entering the market in the near future. The author was very impartial and unbiased, not taking any side of the issue. Today many retailers and companies are against selling food that is genetically modified, and countless are labeling GMOs. In August, President Obama signed the GMO food label law, requiring all GMOs to be labeled. This can synthesize back to the 1840s, when countless Irish immigrated to America, fleeing the potato famine.
